Why Numbers Changed

2 min read

This article helps explain why forecast values may change between planning periods or after reviewing forecasts in SAFIO. Forecast changes are often expected and are typically the result of planner adjustments, imported data, or updates made during the planning process.

Symptoms #

You may notice one or more of the following:

  • Forecast values are different than they were previously.
  • Forecast totals have increased or decreased unexpectedly.
  • A forecast no longer matches a previous report or export.
  • Another user reports different forecast values than expected.
  • Forecast quantities changed without your knowledge.

Possible Causes #

Forecast values may change for several reasons, including:

  • A planner manually updated the forecast.
  • Forecast data was imported from another system.
  • The planning process included approved forecast revisions.
  • Historical demand or planning data was refreshed.
  • A previously locked forecast period was unlocked and updated.
  • Forecast calculations or business assumptions were revised.

Not all forecast changes indicate a problem. Many are a normal part of the forecasting process.

Resolution #

1. Confirm Which Forecast Changed

Identify the product, account, planning period, and forecast values that appear different.

2. Review the Forecast Audit Log

Determine whether the forecast was updated, when the change occurred, and who made the change.

3. Verify Recent Planning Activities

Confirm whether recent forecast reviews, approvals, imports, or planning meetings resulted in expected forecast updates.

4. Check the Forecast Status

Determine whether the planning period is open, locked, or has recently been unlocked for additional revisions.

5. Contact the Responsible Planner

If the reason for the change cannot be determined, consult the planner or administrator responsible for maintaining the forecast.

Preventative Tips #

To minimize unexpected forecast changes:

  • Follow a consistent monthly planning workflow.
  • Review forecast updates before publishing.
  • Lock approved planning periods when appropriate.
  • Use the Forecast Audit Log to monitor significant forecast revisions.
  • Communicate major forecast changes with affected stakeholders.
